Last month, Etsy finally introduced shared access for shop teams - something growing stores have needed for years. The idea is welcome, especially as we head into the Holiday Season. But it comes with Etsy's familiar almost-working twist: team members can help with daily tasks while the tools needed to analyze and grow the store remain blocked. For growth marketing, the new team access is currently unusable. So this month, we want to look at how Etsy should build it to support the businesses and teams actually working on the platform.
Why Etsy’s New Team Access Falls Short for Growing Stores
We have been helping Etsy businesses grow since 2013. For more than a decade, sellers have been building teams and working with specialists while everyone has had to work through a single shop login. Finally, someone on Etsy's product team seems to have warmed up to the idea that sharing one login demands an unnecessarily high level of trust just to collaborate. But the permissions they have introduced suggest they still do not understand what goes into growing a store.
1. Etsy Team Shared Access - how it works right now?
In its September announcement about shared access, Etsy introduced a new type of separate team logins. The new team members can manage orders and shipping, create and edit listings, and respond to buyer messages.
For part-time help packing orders or handling customer enquiries, this is useful. Especially during the Holiday Season, these are exactly the tasks many shop owners need help with in peak weeks.
But Stats, Marketing, Apps, Settings and Performance are currently unavailable to team members. There is only one new type of login with limited permissions, so the owner cannot grant growth access to a trusted marketing team.

What's more, a lot of these activities are connected. Currently, a team member can edit a listing, but cannot properly understand its performance and what's actually working. They can upload a new thumbnail, but cannot review the traffic and conversion data that should guide the decision. And they cannot manage Etsy Ads or see traffic data.
These restrictions prevent the core work of analysis, strategy and Etsy marketing management, making the current access unusable for Etsy growth.
2. What access does an Etsy marketing team need?
Growth marketing starts with understanding what is happening in the store. Which listings are attracting visitors? Which ones are converting? Where is traffic falling? Which products deserve more advertising? What should we develop next month, and what needs attention today?
These are the questions behind a monthly strategy and the ongoing SEO and creative marketing work inside an Etsy store. Answering them requires access to Etsy Stats, orders data, marketing tools and the apps used for analysis. This information needs to be available where the team is doing the work.
Order access is already part of the new system, which is helpful. But orders alone cannot tell the full story. Performance understanding needs to be rooted in real-time data about how customers find the shop, how individual listings perform and, most importantly, what happens after optimizing and making changes.
Stats are there to be used by the team members taking care of Etsy traffic and sales. Giving a team permission to make changes while withholding the information needed to make sure those changes are reasonable just leaves the job half-finished.
3. Keep financial controls behind a separate wall
The one thing to keep solely for the owner are bank details and ownership settings. These areas should remain firmly under the ultimate owner / admin account's control.
But Etsy needs to separate the idea about financials from actual revenue, conversion and advertising spending figures which are essential inputs for marketing decisions. Seeing those numbers is completely different from financial settings where payouts go.
An Etsy marketing team needs to understand how the business makes money. The owner should retain control over where that money goes.
Keep bank details, payouts, tax information, legal ownership and account security behind the owner's permissions. Then let the owner decide who can access the operational and marketing tools. This would address ownership and bank details security while allowing team members to do one of the main activities required for running a successful Etsy store - growing sales.
4. Etsy Team Access - how to get it right?
A customer service assistant and an Etsy marketing expert have different responsibilities. Etsy should reflect that with two team roles alongside the owner's full access, allowing the owner to assign either role or both.
Fulfillment and customer service
- Manage orders, add tracking and handle fulfilment.
- Read and respond to customer messages.
- Upload listing photos and update product information.
- Maintain listings and inventory as part of the shop's daily workflow.
Growth and marketing
- Access the full Stats and order data to analyze traffic, conversion and sales performance.
- Review Search Visibility, customer service statistics and policy violation information.
- Manage Marketing, including Etsy Ads, sales, discounts and targeted offers.
- Access and manage the apps needed for reporting and marketing work.
- Develop listings and update the shop settings relevant to SEO, marketing and the customer experience like shipping, shop appearance, policy settings and so on.
Access to shop settings should be separated from sensitive account settings. Updating a shipping profile or shop policy should not require the same level of permissions as changing the owner's login, banking or legal details.
Etsy has taken a big step forward by introducing separate team accounts - a feature sellers have been requesting for years. Now we hope they will listen to what sellers need and take the next step much sooner. We need permissions that support one of the core roles in every Etsy store - growing traffic and sales.
Separate team accounts are a step in the right direction. But until Etsy opens the tools needed for analysis, strategy and marketing, the new access remains unusable for growing an Etsy store.
Our recommendation for Etsy Team Access is straightforward: keep sensitive financial and account controls with the owner, offer two distinct roles for customer operations and growth marketing, and let sellers decide who they trust with each. Stats, marketing, apps and settings work together with listing editing and should be available for the team members responsible for traffic and sales.
